National Business Names Register

A new national business names registration system has commenced. The new register will replace the registers which were previously maintained in each State and Territory of Australia and will be managed by ASIC. The benefits of the national register include:

  • Removing the need for businesses which trade in more than one State or Territory registering in multiple jurisdictions;
  • Online registration and payment options will be available;
  • Reduced registration fees.

All existing Queensland business names will be automatically transferred to the new register. For businesses that have registered in multiple jurisdictions, all business names will be transferred and you are able to keep one business name and cancel or let duplicate business names expire.

Where the same business name has been registered by different businesses in different jurisdictions, an additional identifying word (for example “Queensland”) will appear on the register, however businesses can continue trading using their usual business name.

The fee for registration of a business name is currently $30 for one year, or $70 for three years, representing a significant discount on the previous Queensland fees. There is no fee to cancel a business name. Registering an ABN will remain free of charge.

Further information is available from the Office of Fair Trading and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
